Biodegradable and bio-based plastics have been presented as potential alternatives to fossil fuel-based plastics, for example as food packaging (Peelman et al. 2013). Although these two types currently account for only a small share of the market, their global production is predicted to grow rapidly as production costs decrease (European Bioplastics 2020).
