Fast-growing forest plantations in Mediterranean-type climates are a significant fire risk in the absence of substantial and regular fuel treatments. Tree species with well-developed fire resistance traits such as thick bark – for example, Canary pine (Pinus canariensis) – are the ideal candidates for hazard reduction burning programmes in both natural and planted forests.
