Effects of high fire frequency on chaparral in the North American Mediterranean climate region
The entire photographed area near San Diego was burnt in 1970, then two fires occurred in 2001 and 2003. The area in the foreground, dominated by exotic annual grasses and limited native shrub regeneration, has an FRI of 16.7 years over the last 50 years. Ecosystem resilience has suffered tremendously.
