Spotted hyaena (Crocuta crocuta), Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Description

In the Masai Mara, spotted hyena territories are stable, but not large, averaging 12 hyenas per 100 sq km. Prey is scattered and ranges are separated by wide buffer zones. Aggressive hyena inter-clan meetings occur when they are drawn closer to each other because of the wildebeest migration. The wildebeest migrate between Serengeti in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya in search of water and grass between seasons.
