Description

The tidal flats of the West Coast National Park (Langebaan Lagoon), are the southernmost wintering site of long distant migratory Arctic shorebirds along the East Atlantic Flyway, such as Knots (Calidris canutus canutus), Curlew Sandpipers (Calidris ferruginea) and Grey Plovers (Pluvialis squatarola). Within the goal of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) to protect ecological networks, this site is an important example of a protected "bird airport".
