Mangroves and Shorebirds in the Lamu area, Indian Ocean Coast of Kenya

Description

The mangrove and tidal flat habitats in the area of Lamu on the Indian ocean coast of North-East Kenya, close to the border of Somalia, are known as some of the most extensive and species-rich along the entire coast of East Africa. They form a very important value in terms of biodiversity, climate protection (blue carbon), fishery, nature-based tourism and coastal protection. These values are presently threatened by plans to build a second port of Kenya north of Lamu, the ancient trade center of the Lamu Archipelago.
