The First Ministerial Meeting of the Arctic Council was held in Iqaluit, Canada, September 17- 18, 1998. Iqaluit is the territorial capital and the largest community of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. The meeting was opened with a traditional ceremony of a local Iqalummiuq.
